Your Land Registry address for service: who sees it and how to change it

Last reviewed

In short

The HM Land Registry register shows an address for service for each owner, and anyone can buy an official copy of a title register for £7 online. If that address is your home, your name, your rental property and your home are linked for anyone who looks. Owners can have up to three addresses for service, a care-of address is accepted and form COG1 is used to change them.

Who can see your Land Registry address?

Anyone. The register shows each owner's address for service, and an official copy of a title register costs £7 online or £11 by post. You do not need to be the owner, a tenant or a professional to buy one.

That openness is useful for buyers and lenders. For a landlord it means a tenant, or anyone else, can connect your name, your rental property and the address you gave when you bought. If that was your home, it stays on the register until you change it.

Why does it matter for a landlord?

A home address on the title register is one more place where your name, the property you let and where you live sit side by side. Details like these can be linked across documents and public registers and matched with what is on tenancy paperwork or a licence register. If a disagreement with a tenant turns sour, it can reach your front door. Knowing where someone lives also makes fraud and social engineering easier. That is a general privacy risk for anyone, not something landlords alone face.

There is a practical side too. Every time you move house, an out of date address for service is one more record to fix, alongside your tenants, your deposit scheme, the council and the PRS database.

What is an address for service?

It is the contact address for you as a registered owner. Letters about your title need to reach you there, so it has to be an address you actually check. It is not the same as the property address, and it does not have to be where you live.

How many addresses for service can you have?

HM Land Registry practice guide 55, updated 18 May 2026, sets out the rules:

  • each owner can have up to three addresses for service
  • at least one must be a postal address, but it does not have to be in the UK
  • the others can be an email address or a DX address
  • a care-of address is accepted

That gives landlords room to replace a home address with one that keeps working when they move.

What should you put there if you use a correspondence address?

Keep it simple, and make sure at least one address is somewhere you actually monitor. For a Landlord Address customer a sensible set looks like this.

An example set of addresses for service
AddressWhat to giveWhy
Postal addressYour name, care of Landlord Address, with your personal reference and our address in EnglandPost is logged the day it arrives, scanned within one working day, and official post is flagged to you the same working day
Email addressAn email address you check, ideally one kept for property mattersA second way to reach you
Third addressOptional. Another postal address, an email address or a DX address, such as your solicitor'sOnly if it adds something, because every address you list must stay current

Whatever you choose, do not leave an old address on the register that you no longer check. Letters sent there will not reach you, and you may never know they were sent.

How do you change your Land Registry address for service?

  1. List your title numbers

Note every title where you are a registered owner, including any you own jointly. Portfolio landlords can use one Landlord Address reference for every title.

  2. Get form COG1

Form COG1 is used to update registered owners' contact addresses. Download it from the GOV.UK page on updating a registered owner's contact address, and check the current guidance and any fee there. If you own jointly, follow the form's guidance on addresses for each owner.

  3. Give up to three addresses

Include at least one postal address. If you use Landlord Address, include your reference so post reaches the right account.

  4. Send it and check the result

Follow the instructions with the form. Once the change is made, it is worth buying an up to date official copy for £7 to check the register reads as you expect.

Why keep one address you actually monitor?

An address for service exists so you can be contacted about your property. Changing it for privacy only works if the new address is as reliable as the old one. That is the principle behind Landlord Address: private, never unreachable. We check every customer's identity before issuing an address and log every letter under your reference. Legal and official originals are never shredded without your instruction. See how it works.

Does changing it remove your home address everywhere?

No. It changes the address for service on the register and nothing else. Your home address may still be on tenancy papers, deposit records or a council licence register, and the PRS database will ask for your residential address when your region opens. Our guide to changing your landlord address and the privacy checklist cover each place in turn. Where a landlord's address is published explains what the public can see, and every landlord address rule in one table sets out what each rule asks for.

Common questions

Does my address for service have to be in the UK?

No. At least one must be a postal address, but practice guide 55 says it does not have to be in the UK. If you live abroad, an address in England may still be easier to keep an eye on. See overseas landlords.

Can I use my letting agent's address?

A care-of address is accepted, so in principle yes. You would need to change it again if you change agent or start managing yourself. See using your letting agent's address.

How much does it cost someone to see my address?

An official copy of a title register costs £7 online and £11 by post, according to HM Land Registry's fees page.

Will Landlord Address change it for me?

No. As the registered owner you send form COG1 yourself. Once your identity check is complete we issue your address and reference to use on it.
